OBJECTIVE: To report the use of a Lateral Epicondylar Anatomical Plate for the management of humeral condylar fractures (HCF) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Medical records of dogs with HCF stabilized using the Lateral Epicondylar Anatomical Plate at six UK veterinary referral centres between April 2018 and February 2021 were reviewed. Long-term follow-up (>6 months) was obtained via owner questionnaire, which incorporated the Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs clinical metrology instrument. RESULTS: Sixty-two HCF were treated in 61 dogs (44 lateral condylar fractures [LCF] and 18 intracondylar (T/Y) fractures [ICF]). Fifty-one dogs were Spaniels or Spaniel crossbreeds. Intraoperative contouring of the plate was required for one dog-a French Bulldog. Postoperative complications occurred in 14/42 LCF and 6/18 ICF; overall there were 14 minor, 8 major, and 2 catastrophic complications. On final follow-up imaging, there was evidence of partial or complete osseous continuity of the condylar part of the fracture 32/53 HCF (24/39 LCF and 8/14 ICF) and lateral epicondylar part of the fracture in 53/53 HCF (39/39 LCF and 14/14 ICF). At final reexamination, 20/28 dogs with LCF and 5/13 dogs with ICF were not lame and the remaining dogs demonstrated mild lameness. According to the owner questionnaire, 17/17 dogs with LCF and 8/10 dogs with ICF returned to full limb use and median Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs scores were 2/52 for LCF and 6.5/52 for ICF. CONCLUSION: The Lateral Epicondylar Anatomical Plate can be used successfully for the surgical stabilization of HCF in dogs.

Brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) are a culturally significant ratite species endemic to New Zealand. Chicks can develop diseases of the yolk sac which can be fatal if not promptly recognized and treated. Ultrasound examination of the yolk sac is an important component in the evaluation of chicks with suspected yolk sac disease. However, there are currently no reports of the normal ultrasonographic appearance of the regressing yolk sac in this species. The objective of this prospective reference interval study was to describe the normal ultrasonographic appearance of the yolk sac in brown kiwi chicks. Focused coelomic sonographic examinations were performed on 29 healthy chicks from >1 day of age until the yolk sac was completely absorbed or was <1 mL in volume. 41.6% (57/137) of yolks were round/ovoid in shape and 58.6% (80/137) had lobulated margins with invaginations. All yolks (137/137) were hyperechoic relative to adjacent coelomic structures. The heterogeneity of the echogenicity of the yolk was significantly associated with age (increased heterogeneity in younger birds) and was homogeneous, mildly heterogeneous, and moderately heterogeneous in 33% (46/138), 46% (63/138), and 21% (29/138) of all examinations respectively. Intrasac anechoic pockets were seen in 14% (20/139) of yolk sacs. The rate of yolk sac resorption slowed with age. In all examinations identifying a completely absorbed yolk sac or a yolk sac <1 mL in volume, chicks were less than 21 days old. The results of this study provide a reference of normal for the sonographic appearance of the yolk sac in captive brown kiwi chicks.

Improved understanding of expression of recombinant immunoglobulin (IgG)-based therapies can decrease manufacturing process costs and bring down costs to patients. Deletion of C-terminal Lysine (C-Lys) from IgG molecules has been shown to greatly impact yield. This study set out to characterise structural components of IgG C-terminal variants which modulate protein expression by examination of the consequences of mutations at the C-terminal of IgG on expression and by the use of fluorescent C-terminal fragment fusion proteins. Cell-based and cell-free experiments were also implemented to characterise how the C-terminal differentially engages with cellular pathways to modulate expression. IgG variants engineered by removal of the C-terminal Lys were expressed at significantly lower rates than control variants by CHO (and HEK) cells. Engineered constructs of mCherry fused with short regions of the C-terminal regions of IgG mimicked the ordering of expressability observed for IgG variants. These fluorescent C-terminal fragment fusions offered the potential to profile how sequences (and point mutations) modified expression. Via combinations of cell and cell-free systems, screening across a range of variants of IgG and mCherry reporter constructs has shown that interactions between specific C-terminal amino acid sequences and the ribosome can regulate the rate and extent of expression. This study highlights the importance of amino acid sequence regulatory events determining the efficiency of production of desirable recombinant proteins, showing that wildtype C-terminal lysine is a necessary capping molecule for IgG1 expression. From a wider perspective, these data are especially significant towards the design of novel entities. The approach has also provided information about novel short C-terminal tags which may be used to provide selective synthesis of specific subunits in the production of multisubunit products. Alternative strategies for removing C-terminal amino acid heterogeneity whilst maintaining efficient rates of expression have been provided.

Case Description: A serval (Leptailurus serval) presented for progressive enlargement of the right adrenal gland, which had been found incidentally on abdominal ultrasound 2 years previously and upon subsequent ultrasound examinations enlarged progressively from 1.26 to 1.43 cm. Clinical Findings: Clinical signs had not been recorded by the zookeeper, however, progressive weight gain and lethargy were reported. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the presence of a right caudal pole adrenal mass measuring 1.8 cm. Treatment and Outcome: The right adrenal with associated mass was surgically resected via a ventral midline laparotomy that included the resection of the right phrenicoabdominal vein in association with the mass. Histopathological examination identified the mass as an epithelial cyst. Chromogranin A staining for a possible pheochromocytoma was performed but was negative. The serval recovered at the zoo without complication and has been on display for 18 months. Clinical Relevance: Epithelial adrenal cysts have not been previously reported in felids. An adrenal cyst should be included on the differential list for any animal with an enlarged, slowly growing adrenal gland mass with non-specific clinical signs.

A 7-week-old Labrador retriever presented for further investigation into acute onset regurgitation, following weaning from liquid to solid food. A videofluoroscopic swallow study demonstrated a severe, focal esophageal dilation in the mid-cervical region, with marked luminal narrowing distally. Computed tomography with angiography revealed esophageal stenosis, extending from C4-T2, secondary to circumferential esophageal wall thickening. With the concern for development of secondary aspiration pneumonia, the owners elected to euthanize the dog and consented to postmortem examination. A diagnosis of segmental, cervical esophageal muscular hypertrophy was made on necropsy, consistent with the fibromuscular thickening type of congenital esophageal stenosis reported in humans.

Hypoattenuating ocular lenses on CT have been described with cataract formation in humans, however published studies are currently lacking regarding this finding in veterinary patients. The purpose of this retrospective and prospective study was to describe the varying CT appearances of the ocular lens in vivo, and investigate the causes for CT density variations in a population of cats and dogs. A total of 102 canine and feline patients with CT of the head acquired at the authors' hospital between May 2011 and March 2019 were included. A bilateral hypoattenuating halo surrounding an isoattenuating to mildly hypoattenuating core was described in the ocular lens center of every cat in which a Philips brand proprietary image construction filter was used. A similar but more varied hypoattenuating region was noted in the lenses of 45.8% of dogs where the same filter was applied, as well as 43.8% of dogs with a second, similar filter. Ophthalmic examination of three live cats and one dog with hypoattenuating lenses demonstrated normal lens translucency, excluding the presence of cataract. The effect of different proprietary filters on lens appearance was also described in three fresh cadavers with normal lenses identified on ophthalmic, macroscopic, and microscopic examination. Etiology of the hypoattenuating areas within the ocular lens was not conclusively determined. Recognition that such a variant may be seen in the absence of cataract is important, in order to prevent misdiagnosis.

Diagnostic imaging of the eye can be performed using ultrasonography, MRI or CT. This study describes the CT dimensions, volumes and radiodensities of presumed normal feline intraocular structures. Nineteen adult patients were included in this retrospective study. Fourteen males and five females were included, with domestic short hair (DSH) being the predominant breed. Length, volume and radiodensity values for the lens, anterior chamber, vitreous chamber and optic nerve were calculated as well as measurements of the optic nerve width. There was no significant correlation found on linear regression analysis comparing patient's body weight with the various ocular measurements. Measurements of the lens, globe and optic nerve had significant differences (P<0.05) noted between the sexes, with males having increased values. These results may be skewed due to the large majority of male patients in the study. There was a weak correlation found between age and right eye (OD) optic nerve width, with an increase in the optic nerve width noted with increasing age. The findings of this study are a first step in establishing CT reference values for feline intraocular structure measurements.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 13-year-old neutered male Abyssinian cat with a 4-month history of right forelimb edema and multifocal crusting lesions at the distal aspect of the antebrachium was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for evaluation. Extensive hemorrhage from the lesions had been observed after self-grooming, and findings on histologic examination of a skin biopsy sample prior to referral were consistent with atypical dermal hemodynamics and inflammation. CLINICAL FINDINGS Diffuse pitting edema and multifocal, 3- to 4-mm-diameter sanguineous crusting lesions affecting the antebrachium were observed distal to a pulsatile subcutaneous mass in the right elbow joint region that had a palpable thrill and auscultable bruit. No systemic abnormalities were detected. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME Contrast-enhanced CT angiography with 3-D reconstruction identified an arteriovenous fistula with a large aberrant vessel coursing distally. Surgical ligation of an arterialized vein distal to the fistula without en bloc resection led to resolution of all clinical signs. The vascular anomaly was no longer patent when diagnostic imaging was repeated 5 months after surgery. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Acquired arteriovenous fistulas can lead to bleeding skin lesions affecting the antebrachium in cats. Surgical ligation of an aberrant reverse-shunting vein distal to the fistula successfully resolved clinical signs in the cat of this report and may warrant investigation as a treatment option in cats with this condition.

OBJECTIVES: To compare complication rates and outcomes between cases of concomitant cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) disease and medial patellar luxation (MPL) treated using extracapsular stabilization and tibial tuberosity transposition (ECS+TTT) and tibial tuberosity transposition and advancement (TTTA). METHODS: In a multicentre retrospective study, records from four referral hospitals were reviewed for dogs with concomitant CrCL pathology and MPL treated using ECS+TTT or TTTA. Data retrieved included signalment, partial/complete CrCL tear, MPL grade, treatment performed, occurrence of postoperative complications, and postoperative outcome grade. Associations between surgical procedure and risk of complication and surgical procedure and outcome were investigated using univariable logistic regression and proportional odds logistic regression respectively. Multiple logistic regression was used to explore confounding factors. RESULTS: A total of 72 stifles were evaluated in 66 dogs; 32 stifles were stabilized using ECS+TTT and 40 using TTTA. Overall complications were 2.7 times more frequent in the ECS+TTT group and major complications occurred only in this group. The TTTA group was less likely to suffer complications (17.5%) compared to the ECS+TTT group (46.9%) (p = 0.009) and TTTA cases had lower odds of a poorer clinical outcome (p = 0.047). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Stifles stabilized using ECS+TTT are more likely to suffer from postoperative complications and a poorer clinical outcome when compared to TTTA.

OBJECTIVE: To compare radiographic healing and clinical outcome of a frontal-opening wedge osteotomy of canine tibiae when the osteotomy site is packed with either a novel bovine xenograft or standard autogenous cancellous bone graft (ACBG). STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 82) with partial or complete rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament that had tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). METHODS: In 48 dogs, the osteotomy was packed with a novel bovine xenograft and in 34 dogs, ACBG was used. Eight week postoperative radiographs from both groups were graded for osteotomy healing using a 0-4-point scale. Data were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney test with significance set at P < .05. RESULTS: Thirty-four dogs (39 stifles) with xenoimplants had complete records and radiographic follow-up at 8 weeks. No significant differences between xenografting and autografting were identified in grading of osteotomy fill, osteointegration, or healing of the distal osteotomy. Significant differences were noted in grading of osteotomy healing proximally (autograft > xenoimplant) and of opacity in the osteotomy site (xenoimplant > autograft). CONCLUSIONS: Radiographic evidence of healing of the xenoimplanted portion of the TTA osteotomy was equivalent to results with ACBG. Healing of the proximal osteotomy site (above the cage) was improved when ACBG was used as the graft.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, using inverse dynamic analysis, the biomechanical outcome from tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) surgery in dogs affected by unilateral cranial cruciate ligament failure (CCLF). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 13) 11-20 months after surgery. METHODS: Kinematic and force data were collected from 13 dogs 11-20 months after TTA and inverse dynamics analysis of the dogs' pelvic limb mechanical function performed. Angle, moment, and power were calculated for each joint. Total support moment (TSM) was calculated. RESULTS: Six dogs were affected on the right side (Raff) and 7 on the left (Laff). Peak stifle flexor moment was significantly larger for the right stifle compared with the left in Laff dogs, but similar in Raff dogs. Peak stifle extensor moment was significantly larger for the left stifle compared with the right in Raff dogs, and was also larger for the left stifle compared with the right in Laff dogs. Stifle power in early stance was larger on the left in Raff dogs and significantly larger on the right in Laff dogs. TSM was larger on the right in Raff dogs and significantly larger on the right in Laff dogs. CONCLUSIONS: Affected limbs had a reduction in power of the stifle flexors. Irrespective of the side of CCLF, TSM was larger on the right side and the stifle extensor moment in late stance was larger on the left, perhaps indicating a mechanical limb dominance effect.
